Very incisive email I just received from you -- TAKING SHOTS: CASEY MEANS' SURGEON GENERAL NOMINATION HEARING PLAY BY PLAY.

Thanks. I enjoyed reading it, partially because there was a lot there I didn't know. Annnnddd -- how bout keeping that position open for what? A year? These folks are poison pills. Once they get in, they start to dismantle public health.

The hearing inspired me to read https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0039606021006978 on some great SGs and how the office evolved

Highlights included

• How Koop’s “operations on very sick newborns and his experiences consoling concerned parents led him to seek spiritual guidance in the Christian faith”

• How Koop spoke directly on his “thoughts on abortion and the value of human life while separating what he believed to be medical versus moral issues.”

• Koop’s willingness to stand up to anti-health dogma of Reagan’s era re AIDS

• And especially telling, a snippet from former SGs’ 2007 testimony to Congress, where one said that he’d “never seen [the government health environment] as partisan, as malicious, as vindictive, as mean-spirited as it is today.”

The job needs someone who can stand up for the public’s health, often against politicians’ dogmas and ideologies. Obviously Casey Means is nowhere close to meeting that standard.

thank you both! keep speaking out! As someone who suffers from chronic illnesses that has deteriorated since this regime came to power (stress & fear), I couldn't watch Casey Means for 5 minutes! Also, as a retired nurse ( retired early due to illness), what our government is doing to our health is literally criminal! They want us sick! Those with power & $ will have access to real medicine & science for themselves & their families as they lie to the country! Leaving the World health organization is another betrayal!

I’d have loved to hear a Senator ask, “look, when you were vetted pre-nomination, did nobody say ‘this is an important job and we need to scrutinize every potential problem’ to be sure you were the best person for this job”?

(One of which concerns might have been as, “have you been scrupulous about conflicts of interest because ‘Trust’ is a key part of our story in order to advance our agenda”)

And also if a Senator had asked, “when you were prepped for this hearing to show that you were on top of the demands for this job, did you not get asked how you’d handle Qs about how your standards and practices of being an influencer showed ability to meet the demands of being Surgeon General of the United States?”

I mean, MAGA/MAHA gives us the impression of not even scraping the bottom of the barrel very well in their urge to push their grift- and power-hungry assault on US public health.
